Mayne Island Reads – 2018-2019
Jul 4 2018 – Jun 21 2019 all-day

Mayne Island Reads 2018-2019

The Mayne Island Reads title for 2018-2019 is In This Together:  Fifteen Stories of Truth and Reconciliation.

The 15 essays written by indigenous and non-indigenous Canadians grapple with Canada’s colonial past and present, and explore ways to move forward with reconciliation and healing. Ten copies of the book were handed out at the National Indigenous Peoples’ Day event at the Mayne Is. School on June 21st, and will begin to make their way through the community.

Anyone hoping to read a copy can leave their name on the wait-list at the Mayne Island Library. This year the reading challenge will run right through until the National Indigenous Peoples’ Day event next June 21st, 2019.

Book Launch – Mayne Island Library

Mayne Island author, Pam Withers, launches her 18th young adult novel, STOWAWAY, at the Mayne Island Library on Sunday, August 19 from 2-3:30 pm. Come for homemade cookies, readings, and autographed books.

Inspired by Horton Bay, Mayne Island (which the novel identifies as Horton Island), Stowaway puts and adventurous twist on the topic of people smuggling.

Owen is a bored West Coast Canadian teen who decides to stow away on a visiting yacht just for fun. Imagine his shock to find it holds six Guatemalan teens whose parents have paid the captain and his first mate – a captive former street kid – to leave violent Guatemala and usher them illegally into Canada.

To survive, the characters of Stowaway must redefine trust, friendship, and family.

Free event, all welcome.

Book Launch at the Mayne Island Library

Sunday Aug. 26, at 2 pm.

Join Governor-General Award-winning author Sarah Ellis for the launch of her latest Ben book, Ben and the Scaredy-Dog.

The dog in the story was inspired by Mayne Island’s own SallyDog (Judi and Libbie’s gentle black lab). If she is brave enough Sally may join us out on the patio.

There will be copies of the book available for sale and the author will sign them. Sally might too.
