A Walk of A Thousand Miles
Sunday Jan. 7, 2018
2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
This is a light-hearted talk about the pitfalls, the pratfalls and the joys of walking the Camino de Compostelo, a pilgrimage trail through France and Spain. It could be of interest to those who have already made the journey and wish to share their experiences, to those who are thinking of doing it and finally to those who would rather dream and enjoy the adventure at others’ expense.

The Introduction to French level is for those who have had very little or no exposure to French. Beginners is for those who have some prior knowledge of French. The Intermediate level focuses on conversation so there is less material forwarded but Sylvie will send instructions if needed. Reconciliation with Levi Wilson – Galiano Is. Library
Jan 14 @ 3:00 pm – 4:45 pm

The Galiano Library presents: SpeakerSeries…learning with locals

Levi Wilson

Sunday Jan. 14th, 2018

What does “reconciliation” mean to Galiano and its peoples?

An SFU graduate, Levi is currently studying to be a Social Studies educator. He is a member of the Gitga’at First Nation through his grandmother’s line, though he grew up on Galiano among his grandfather’s family, descendants of the Lamalcha First Nation.

This presentation will explore “reconciliation” and what this idea could mean for Galiano and the Southern Gulf Islands. By sharing understandings of our local history, perhaps we may begin to open pathways that can lead us towards a future of collective integrity.

A 45 minute presentation, followed by 45-60 minutes Q & A and discussion.

Sunday Afternoon at the Pender Is. Library presents:

“Death by Joy” with author Jim Cribb

Sunday Jan. 21, 2-4 pm.

Join author, photographer, and filmmaker Jim Cribb as he discusses his book and film “Death by Joy – An escorted journey“, the true story of one woman’s choice to find joy in dying and her unforgettable discoveries along the way. Explore dying from a perspective wildly at odds with Western society’s grim take on the subject. How could the protagonist, Mary, confronted with a damning diagnosis, choose a joyful path to death, and stride with such carefree steps along it?

Adventure in China – Pender Is. Library
Feb 4 @ 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Sunday afternoon at the Pender Is. Library presents:

A Three Year Adventure in China with Dianne and Peter Wilson

Sunday Feb. 4 – 2-4 pm.

In August 2008, Dianne and Peter Wilson embarked on a new adventure in China. What started out as a 2 year commitment turned into 3 years of living, working, and travelling in this vast and varied country. Dianne had the opportunity to be the first Canadian ESL Director for the Dalian Maple Leaf International High School which was located near the small town of Jinshitan (ca. 70,000 people) over an hour away from the city of Dalian in Liaoning Province. Peter willingly went along and worked as one of the ESL teachers, an “unofficial tour guide”, and a substitute teacher in the BC high school program.

During their 3 years, when not working, they travelled to several parts of China. A few of the well-known places they visited were Dandong, Xi’an, Beijing, Shanghai, Dali, Lijiang, Guilin, Yangshuo, Hong Kong, and Macau. As well, they travelled to small villages and rural areas. Their many experiences left them with wonderful memories, not to mention thousands of photographs.  Their challenge for the upcoming presentation at the library is to pare the photos down to about 200!

All welcome to this free presentation, refreshments by donation. Seating is limited.

The Galiano Library presents: Speaker Series…learning with locals

Sunday, Feb. 11, 3:00-4:45 pm.

Gary Ross

What’s your story?

Some things I learned about digital marketing as Director of Global Content at Destination BC:

  1. Google and Facebook know a lot more about you than you realize.
  2. Smartphones are as addictive as slot machines.
  3. Video is quickly replacing still photos on social media.
  4. People want to be told, not sold. Don’t sell them a product; tell them a story.

Gart Ross is an author, editor, and communications consultant. His presentation about effective communication, “The Ross Rules“, has been applauded by academic, nonprofit, and corporate audiences alike.

Join us for a 45 minute presentation, followed by Q & A and discussion.
