Mayne Island Reads 2018-2019
The Mayne Island Reads title for 2018-2019 is In This Together: Fifteen Stories of Truth and Reconciliation.
The 15 essays written by indigenous and non-indigenous Canadians grapple with Canada’s colonial past and present, and explore ways to move forward with reconciliation and healing. Ten copies of the book were handed out at the National Indigenous Peoples’ Day event at the Mayne Is. School on June 21st, and will begin to make their way through the community.
Reading challenge supplemental:
This year’s reading challenge has a second part to it! That second part is: if you have experienced an “aha” moment, you are encouraged to write that moment down to be included in our community’s own collection. But, unlike the book we are reading, it does not need to be an essay. It could be: a poem, a song, a testimonial, a one line statement or if you like, an essay.
Anyone hoping to read a copy can leave their name on the wait-list at the Mayne Island Library. This year the reading challenge will run right through until the National Indigenous Peoples’ Day event next June 21st, 2019.
