National Indigenous People’s Day 2018
The Mayne Island Library and Mayne Island School, with guidance from John Aitken, will be holding an event to acknowledge National Indigenous People’s Day (formerly National Aboriginal Day) on Thursday, June 21st in the gymnasium at the school.
The event will start at 11:30 am and will include a traditional lunch served by the school students; the announcement of the 2018 Mayne Island Reads title; a chance to view the students’ work on First Nations history and people. Starting at 12:45, the students and community members will be lead through the Blanket Exercise by a facilitator from the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation.
What is the Blanket exercise? A teaching tool to share the historic and contemporary relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada.
The event is free and everyone is welcome.

Get ready kids! The Library’s Summer Reading Club “Motion Commotion!” will start Friday June 29, 2018.
Come by the Library to sign-up and get your own free notebook to keep track of all the books you read in July & August. Collect fun stickers & bookmarks, and proudly receive your very own Reading Medal at the end of the summer.
Regular reading throughout the summer helps kids maintain or improve reading skills while school is out. Kids are encouraged to read lots of books, and to listen to someone read to them. We look forward to seeing you and your family at the Library this summer.
Join the Motion Commotion! with the Summer Reading Club 2018!
