Gene Editing: The potential! And threat?
Sunday Afternoon at the Pender Island Library presents:
Peter Pare: Gene Editing: The potential! And threat?
March 18, 2018, 2-4 pm.
New technology, called CRISPR/Cas, now enables us to edit – change – the genome of an organism. New genes can be added, and existing genes removed. While potential benefits in medicine and agriculture may be relatively clear of controversy, when it comes to altering the human genome, immense ethical concerns arise.
Peter will explain in layperson’s terms the workings and uses of this new and powerful technology and encourage a discussion of some of the pressing and puzzling ethical questions that swirl around it.
