Are Video Games Good for Girls?

This talk will review how girls and women are marginalized and harassed by the cultures surrounding video game players and makers, and why you should be aware of that hostility following revelations like #metoo. I will focus on how deeply structured inequities support a culture of exclusion for women and girls, and on how those structures can be reconfigured to open up spaces of inclusion and support, through research and community action.

Jennifer Jenson is a Professor of Pedagogy and Technology at York University. She has been coming to Galiano Island for over two decades and has spent the past year living here full time with her partner, dog Hank and two cats, Jacket & Spud. Her favourite video game is Frogger.

45 min. presentation followed by Q&A and discussion.
