History of the Piers Island Community Library

The Piers Island Community Library began with one bookshelf in the Piers Island Firehall training room in about 1995, with residents simply borrowing or dropping off books on alternate Saturdays between 1-3 pm.  There were a several island women who opened the Firehall to let people come and “check out” books. It wasn’t until 1998 or so that our “Reading Room” became involved with Southern Gulf Islands Library Commission.

Over the years many have contributed and our Library has grown, evolved, and now covers several walls in the Firehall, has an electric fireplace and cozy seating area, computer, and WiFi access. We also host Tech Cafes, Book Clubs, and Summer Reading Club programs for children.  Many Piers Islanders have been instrumental in the library’s progress and growth, but all would agree that Beacon Books in Sidney has been, and continues to be, wonderfully supportive of the Piers Island Library.
