An Art Exhibition by Geena Powa Sutherland

Believing, Honouring & Freedom”

Sept. & Oct. 2019 at the Library

Geena Powa Sutherland is a Nuu-Chah-Nulth and Coast Salish artist from the Hesquiaht First Nation, on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. She takes great attention and reflection in developing her artistic talent based on her cultural teachings from strong family roots. Currently, Geena is a Native Education Worker for Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council.

Geena’s love and respect for her culture and ancestry are clearly evident in her art. Her art is shared and gifted through traditional First Nations’ Potlatches as she continues to support community solidarity and strengthen bonds between First Nations Tribes, organizations and individual community members.

Geena graduated from Vancouver Island University with a Bachelor’s in First Nations. She has two sons and enjoys spending time with her large family of connections. Geena continues to build a legacy for our future generations by sharing her gifts with many.

Artist Statement:
My life and work are guided by my connections to the land and water. My blood memory of family teachings and the places which hold my roots perpetuate these sacred understandings and messages in my artwork.

Kelly Irving : Street & Travel Photography: Legal and Ethical Considerations

Sunday Oct. 20, 2019

2:00 – 3:00 pm

“Although I love my home, I also love to travel. Visual input is of primary importance in my life: it feeds my visual output. Home and foreign landscapes, cosmopolitan galleries and graffiti walls influence my work. And all those people…”

Kelly will expand on the legal and ethical considerations when photographing subjects on your own adventures around the world.
