Made on Galiano
Past definite, future assured!
The back story — how it all started
In the year 2000 a group of Galiano residents decided that the Island deserved its own community library. None of them had any experience of planning or operating a library, but over the following months they researched, consulted, raised money, brought in more volunteers and in January 2002 the Library opened its doors, in a 400-square foot storefront at the Mall.
By the end of our first year, thanks to generous donors of books and videos, together with the buying skills of our own book advisors, there were 3000 books on our (home-made) shelves. From the beginning our operating costs have been covered by a BC government grant and a tax-based CRD grant. Late in 2002 we decided it was time to get better organized, and a volunteer Library Board was formed. One of the first issues discussed was the need for a building of our own.
Galiano Library Society — New Building Program
For nearly ten years the GLS has been working to find some way for the Island to construct a purpose-designed building large enough to offer a full range of library services and also become a venue for other community activities. This project came to a (temporary) end on April 23 2011 when a referendum in which we asked the Island to finance construction through a property tax levy was narrowly rejected. With the announcement of a $400,000 BC government grant towards the project, along with $200,000 in donations, a second referendum was held and the necessary financing became available.
In partnership with CRD and the School District #64, the GLS planned and built the present Library Building. Construction began in November 2012, adjacent to the local school and community gardens. The collections were moved during May 2013, and the doors opened towards the end of that month.
