Art in the Library – Mayne Island Community Library

Friday March 1 - Saturday April 13

Art in the Library

“Walking forward with the past” Exhibition

Traditional and contemporary Coast Salish carvings.

“The Elliotts are deeply rooted in our community, with a lineage of preserving W̱SÁNEĆ art, language, and culture,” says Indigenous Curator, Rose Spahan. “Senior artists Myrna Crossley and her late husband TEMOSENŦET Charles Elliott as well as emerging artists TEMOSEṈ Charles ‘Chazz’ Elliott Jr. and Matthew Parlby-Elliott have worked closely together, but their works are not normally exhibited in galleries.”

Spahan goes on to note that “Collectively their artistic practices include weaving, drawings, serigraphs, carving and other two-and three-dimensional works that reflect Salish iconography, both in traditional and contemporary styles. This exhibit shares visual stories, rich intergenerational ties and highlights a family that supports one another in a tradition of love, and life. In our good work together, we are correcting the erasure of our W̱SÁNEĆ people here on Mayne Island.”

Co-hosted by the Mayne Island Library Association and the Campbell Bay Music Festival Society
