SENĆOŦEN Language Workshop
The W̱SÁNEĆ School Board, ṮEṮÁĆES Revitalization Project, and the Pender Reconciliation Circle are partnering with the Pender Island Public Library to host a SENĆOŦEN language workshop. We are honoured to welcome W̱SÁNEĆ Elders & Teachers in sharing their time and knowledge with us.
Date: Wednesday March 20th, 2024
Time: 9:30 am – 12:30 pm
Location: Pender Island Public Library
This event is being offered for FREE.
Due to a limit of 35 participants, you’ll be notified of your registration status. A stand-by list will be created as well.
Program will include a brief discussion of the impact of residential schools on the suppression of the language as well as a description of the revitalization of the language through the creation of the SENĆOŦEN alphabet and the ȽÁU,WELṈEW̱ school programs and the development of the SENĆOŦEN dictionary.
Language instruction will include the basics of the alphabet and its sounds, some key expressions and concepts (e.g. ṮEṮÁĆES, ĆELÁṈEN, ÁLEṈENEȻ) and important places names and their meaning (S,DÁYES, QENEN,IW̱, SXIXŦE)
For those who came to the workshop in 2023, there will be more language instruction and for those who didn’t there will be a review of the basics so all are welcome.
